Week 66: Motivation Monday
Sorry for the delay in this week's blog. Given the fact that it was Easter I was juggling a few tasks both personal and business. Hope everyone enjoyed the break and did not indulge too much with the chocolate treats. I was going to do a treasure hunt in my garden for the youngsters but figured I will only end up eating the chockies myself haha. Since it was Bank Holiday this Monday I decided to dedicate this blog to ‘Motivation’ as you need tons of it to get you through those lazy days when you just don't want to do anything. I can only share with you my own experience. It's very hard motivating oneself especially when you’re not getting paid for the work you've done (welcome to a ‘start-up’). I have been working on property for about two years with no income. The first year was lots of research well into the early hours. Year two was all about getting that first deal, starting the actual business and to get a practical project going. I still have a few months before the project completes so I wont get an income until after this date. Also once the payments come through it will go straight into the next project.
So how does one cope in the absence of cash?
Paid work, overtime, second job, side hustle and even bigger is the mindset. The mindset of a winner. Since I'm in it for the long haul I figured I will cash-in on the:
know-how
new learning’s
new circle
trial and error
Basically focusing on all the positives. Reward does not have to be in the form of money. I am quite happy knowing that I am working on my future, learning a new trade and the amount of flexibility I have in the present. If I'm sick I can take it easy. If I have the energy I can pull a couple of all-nighters. You get what you put in and you can slice, divide, arrange and dictate your day to your suiting. My office travels with me and I can put the shutters down anytime. All this in the meantime motivates me. All the things that I am working on excite me as I am the master of my own destiny and not some man or woman on top of a corporate chart.
Motivation is very tricky, I'm quite content with the above but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. I like the idea that I am building on a financial future that is deeply embedded with my values as I want to be involved in a product or service that helps people and not makes them purchase stuff they don't need. There has to be a social course to it and not just profit driven. I want to feel that I am making a difference. There is a shortage in housing and good solid properties. I'm just trying to bridge that gap and earn a living at the same time. These elements give me the push that I need to continue. It's not always great but I am having fun in the process as I enjoy what I'm doing. Taking a derelict house and transforming it is so fulfilling. You get to be creative, organised, master of budgets and lead a team all in one go. What is there not to like. If like me, you have been around a few property gigs then you must've come across the term:
What is your Why?
I hope the above somewhat explains this and as you can see it is a combination of so many overlapping factors. You will hear many saying ‘Family’, don't get me wrong I love my family too but what really drives you? What will get you out of bed? What is your true passion? Write what you feel on a cute bright post-it note, then stick it on that fridge door with a magnet in case the adhesive becomes loose haha.
