Week 57: Big Trouble in Little High Street

Anyway, as per instruction we booked the 28th (in the am) for delivery, both pump and cement chap there. Cement gets mixed on the shop floor then transported to site ready to be pumped. Everything was seamless until the dreaded call, five hours in and the manager from Weltons group (the builders merchants) asked if we still needed the cement as nothing had been touched. At first we thought it was a call in error or some kind of mix up.

Week 56: Merchant Mayhem and Deceleration

I have come to understand that even though my project might be significant to me, for the next person it's just another day at the office. Various work ethics from lots of individuals to balance is not easy. But, no doubt you will improve your communication/people skills by default.

Tip; During the slowdown focus your mind on getting other tasks done. That way you are never hanging around as there is always something to do.

Week 55: The Big Bad World of Traders and Merchants

Welcome to the big bad world of builders merchants! Blimey! So much to choose from where do I start? Jewsons, MKM, Travis Perkins, Buildbase, Selco and of course good old Trade Point. You can honestly get lost in this task as there is so much to choose from. My advice: spend an afternoon, morning or a day if need be and look into their web pages to see which ones you like.

Week 54: Annual Reviews and a bit of TikTok for fun

We have been thinking of joining the growing community of TikTok. The fastest growing app and downloads which have surpassed Instagram and Facebook with a like to like comparison. Upon doing some research it does state that more than 50% of its users are of generation Z (young people between the ages of 8-23). Now before I lose all your attention here I'm just going to give you a quick history lesson as to why you may not want to overlook this.

Week 53: My 2021 Proposal to Myself

Now this is just a summary of my aims for 2021, I have gone into a lot more detail in my personal plan, I didn't want to bore you with too much unnecessary information. You have to break down your goals into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily tasks and review these every evening to make sure that you are on track to meeting your 2021 target. Remember, Don't just write down your new year's resolution on a nice piece of paper in colourful pens all highlighted and then put it away never to be seen again.

Week 52: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

Fifty two weeks ago a very shy and not so confident me vowed to document my journey and be transparent in order to help those in a similar boat…the single house I acquired is one that I actually own as I bought it outright (so not a rental). Never thought this was possible in my first year. The plan was to secure ten, that didn't happen but instead I got something better. There is a saying from the East:

….”that you will get what you need, not what you want”....

Week 51: A Nightmare on High Street

My last visit on site just left me in tears on how bad it all looked. I just kept saying to myself it'll look wrong before it starts to look right. Costs & charges flooding in like asteroids from outer space. Plus having to pay council tax on this money pit, of course the government will want to get their leg-over at some point! It's just shocking, nothing can prepare you for what you will encounter on the job.

Week 50: The Great Strip-Out

Wow! Week 50 already and I have a renovation project which I am trying to orchestrate from three hours away. Every single task is completely new to me so I am starting on a blank canvas and adding life/colour to my renovation as I go along. I am only 2 and a half weeks into the project and have already been stung twice. The lads have gone in from Nottingham and in less then three days have taken out the floors, ceilings and stud walls…

Week 49: What’s the deal with Green Deal?

Government is injecting millions to help tackle this by taking out certain measures or home improvements to bring up the EPC rating (Energy Performance Certificate) of your home. To do this you must first check for eligibility. The form is pretty straight forward. You will be asked some personal data such as name, contact number etc and then a bit more about your position and what it is you want. You have to be either an owner occupier, a landlord or a tenant on low income.

Week 48: Christmas has come early...

The workmen started earlier today at 8 am sharp and my control freak inner gene is in turmoil to drive up three hours north but the sensible me saying; “stay put and leave them to it, you are of no use to them instead focus on other matters of equal importance (yes I talk to myself now) failing that just drive down before sunset to join the lads for a builders brew if it gets unbearable (those ants in the pant’s are raging wore at the moment

Week 45: Here we go again...and Insurance anyone?

While the country should've been celebrating Guy Fawkes Day on the 5th of November, instead we find ourselves in the midst of yet another national lockdown….I have been advised that I must take out an insurance policy to cover the house. It's similar to a landlord's insurance but with a higher price tag. You have to take what is called an ‘empty/vacant house insurance

Week 44: Death by Emails, other Professionals and a Factory Reset

Hello everyone it's the first of November and getting a little nippy out there but I have my regular Ginger Royal to keep me warm. Java Lounge/Birmingham do the best drinks by the way. Not that they have paid me for this but I thought I'd be a good Samaritan and recommend my favourite coffee shop. Previously we touched on all things accountancy and legals but this week it's all about those other little things that help us along the way

Week 43: Surveyors, Solicitors; Just what is all the fuss??

Okay let's eat that frog and get the ugly out the way first. Solicitors! Now don’t get me wrong, it's nothing personal. They are doing a very important job but you will find in your dealing with them (and no other way to put it) that they are a total ‘waste-man or woman’ hahaha. I know my words may seem offensive but apologies in advance. It's not because they are so expensive, or a little obnoxious…

Week 42: Apps, Automation and the Milky Way

First of all I am not from the app generation (want to make this clear) but I am slowly loving and coming around to the idea. I figured I was a little apprehensive at the beginning as I didn't really get the whole techy stuff but, once I threw myself in; guess what: I LOVE IT!. But, before you get swept off your feet by the world of apps I just want to let you know not all apps were created equal.
